Over 34,000 to cast ballots on special voting ‘2’ today -
A total of 34,644 persons are expected to cast their ballots in the second phase of the special voting exercise at today [Sunday], in all designated polling stations across the country.
These are the early voters who will be performing special duties on Election Day December 7 but could not vote on the first day of the special voting on Thursday, December 1.
The Electoral Commission (EC) indicated there was a turnout rate of 72.69 percent, representing 92,231 of 126,875 registered persons, according to provisional figures.
However, hundreds of the early voters, mostly security personnel, in the various regions, queued at polling stations across the country on Thursday, but could not cast their ballots during the exercise.
This second phase is therefore to allow such persons and those whose names were included in the earlier special voters’ list or the updated one provided to political parties to vote.
Persons who transferred their votes and whose names originally appeared on the special voters’ list, but could not vote on December 1, 2016, were also factored into the extension.
Apart from this, individuals who did not transfer their votes, but whose names appeared on the special voters’ list in the constituency where they are registered to vote, comprise the final category of persons expected to benefit from the extension of the special voting.
The decision to allow the second day of special voting was taken by the EC after an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on December 1.
Meanwhile, the EC has reminded persons whose names are on the special voters’ list that they would not be allowed to vote on Wednesday, December 7, and must take the opportunity to do so today.
